RS12: 'synoptic paper' (up to 2009)

Page history last edited by Charlie Barton 15 years ago

Unit 12 is a synoptic paper. This means it builds on all your learning, and rewards you for drawing links between a wide range of ideas.

There are a wide range of possible areas schools can prepare to be ready for this unit.

We have focused on religious experience.  This means that your notes from RS01 last year will be particularly crucial.

You will also need to consider the link between religious experience and religious ethical teachings (which brings in unit 9).

You will also need to consider the relationship between religious experience, reason, faith and proof (which brings in unit 11)

Some of Unit 11 on mysticism and near-death experience is also relevant, particularly the arguments about objectivity and subjectivity.

However [WARNING!] - as a general rule, you should not write about near-death experience, or about non-theistic mysticism in this synoptic paper, because they are not necessarily counted as religious experience by AQA.

Your autumn projects gave you the chance to research into one area that you could specialize in, and write more about in the exam.

They also gave you the chance to reflect on a range of different ideas about religious experience during presentation week.

This year, the exam is on Thursday 18th June (am).

The paper is worth 120 UMS marks, so it is slightly more important.

Last year 1/4 of students got 120/120 which made a huge impact on their overall grades.

As with unit 9 and unit 11, the exam is still 90 mins long. However rather than answering 2 whole questions (or 4 subquestions, if you prefer to think of it that way), you only answer 1 whole question.

You will pick between doing question 1 [both parts (a) and (b)] or question 2 [both parts (a) and (b)].

Although the a) question says it is only worth 20 marks, think of it as being worth 40 marks, and the 30-marker you should think of as being a 60 mark question. You have twice as long, so you are expected to write nearly twice as much (though you are supposed to spend more time planning because it will be a much longer essay to structure).
